“Missional Discipleship Communities” is just the trendy way to talk about Biblical Discipleship. The idea is that Jesus called us to be and make disciples. If we are going to be obedient to this call we have to embrace these three things.
To be missional means we recognize the Kingdom of God is here. God has called us to be the vessels through which His Kingdom invades a broken world. The mission is the Gospel and everything that comes with it. The love of God, forgiving sins, healing sickness, providing for our needs, and shaping us through suffering never stops working. However, sometimes we get distracted from the mission that God’s love sends us on. His work happens through us!
To be committed to discipleship means I am actively seeking to follow Jesus Christ as He leads me through this life. To make disciples means I am helping others do the same. Discipleship has to be more than a meeting once a week. It’s the process of investing significant amounts of time and energy in the life of another person. Effective discipleship produces effective disciples.
To experience community means to be joined to a new family. Jesus used the language of “family” when he talked about the community He was building. If our relationships with each other in Christ does not look like family, we may be missing something. We need each other to shoulder burdens, meet needs, support weakness, and celebrate joys. God has built into everyone a longing for genuine community. Our call is to build the very community people long for.
