The idea for “SafeHouse” discipleship communities has been developing in me for a while now. The best way to describe it is a network of missional discipleship communities meeting in homes, scattered among various neighborhoods, committed to the mission of making disciples. It’s more organic, less organized. It’s more relational, less formal. It’s more community, less formality. Hopefully, it’s more effective at mobilizing God’s people to be on mission in their everyday lives.
Everyone has been called by God to know Him and glorify Him. My call is to help people understand this foundational truth, recognize what it means for them, and challenge them to begin pursuing God’s plan for them to join Him in His mission. Discovering our roll in joining God in His mission begins and ends with the Gospel.
The challenge we face in the church today is we have limited our understanding of the Gospel to the atoning work of Jesus and the access He offers to be with Him in eternity. We don’t do a great job of helping people understand the impact of the Gospel in the here and now. God’s heart is not to just save people and bring them home. His passion is to use people to invade this world with His Kingdom, healing illness, restoring brokenness, establishing community and providing for His people.
The ways God furthers His Kingdom are as diverse as the gifts, calling, and people He seeks to use. Too often our temptation is to take the work God does in one area and systematize it. Every person has a place within a discipleship community. Every discipleship community will gather within neighborhoods where there will be opportunities to do kingdom work among broken people. How God will work through a given discipleship community will be determined by the brokenness that exists where that group gathers.
My passion is to help people identify God’s call to join Him in His mission. We need more people to be a catalyst for others to engage in Kingdom work in places and ways they would otherwise miss.
